Follow us!
I just finished reading “George Washington: The Indispensable Man” by J. T. Flexner. I
have read several books about this remarkable man. Of all the founding fathers of our
country, I am convinced that had there never been a George Washington, we would still be an
English colony, or much worse.

It is true, each of the founding fathers brought their own talents and ideas into the mix
that became the first government on earth that is of, by and for the people. The common
world view was that mankind cannot govern itself; that it requires a king, emperor or other
authority figure. But our founding fathers believed it could be done, if it was properly
structured. The key was that God gives “certain rights” to mankind, such as life, liberty and
the pursuit of happiness.

The 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence bet their lives, the souls and
their sacred honor that they were right.

Government does not and cannot give rights to us. The basic rights come from God.
That was the difference from the common world view at that time. They all knew it was
“The Great Experiment” in government, and they believed it was worth any sacrifice they
might make, to guarantee the freedom of so many living and yet to be born.
If you don’t like to read, there was an excellent made-for-TV mini-series in 1985 called
appropriately, “George Washington.” It stars Barry Bostwick as Washington and the cast of
characters includes many leading star actors and actresses of the time. It is available at the
Central Arkansas Library System. I highly recommend it.

We cannot know too much about how our nation began. Washington was commander in
chief of the Continental Army for 7 years, then presided over the Constitutional Convention.
Did you know his uniform was riddled with rifle balls many times, but he was never
wounded? I believe God had, and has, a purpose in creating a nation like ours, as an example
to other nations of self-government.

There were so many examples of "coincidences" that occurred during the war, and after,
that a person would have to be very cynical not to believe God, behind the scenes, quietly
intervened.
I believe he still does.
Larkin Spivey wrote “Miracles of the American Revolution” in which he details incident
after incident. He believes as I do, that God has intervened countless times to assure our
nation survives. We have heard a lot of controversy and argument lately between government factions.
I remain calm through it all because I believe God has always been in charge, and is still
in charge.

The more American history I read, the more I believe that.
